    The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services.     Position Duties

    The Department of Public Works is currently seeking to fill one (1) part-time unbenefited Graduate Student Intern in the Administrative Services Division.

    Salary range(s) for this classification is $19.82 - $29.27 hourly. This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

    The Administrative Services Division oversees the department’s operations and provides admin support in areas including budget, accounting, training, and Human Resources/recruitment. Reporting to the Recruitment Analyst, the Graduate Student Intern will support the recruitment team.

    Key responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Analyze recruitment metrics, identifying areas for improvement and providing recommendations.
    • Research and implement new sourcing strategies for hard-to-fill positions.
    • Assist with organizing and executing recruitment events, such as career fairs and networking events.
    • Create content for the department’s social media sites to attract candidates.
    • Participate and contribute to team meetings.
    • Assist with other recruitment projects and administrative duties, as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Bachelor’s degree and current enrollment in a master’s degree program from an accredited college or university in business, public administration or closely related field.

    Required Licensing:

    Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license may be required.

    The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable competencies for this position include:

    Job Expertise: Demonstrates knowledge of and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies and federal and state rules and regulations.

    Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills: Develops effective relationships with co-workers and supervisors by helping others accomplish tasks and using collaboration and conflict resolution skills.

    Computer Skills: Experienced with common business computer applications including but not limited to: MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Excel.

    Reliability: Completes quality work assignments in a timely and efficient manner; fulfills responsibilities and maintains confidentiality as appropriate.

    Communication Skills: Communicates and listens effectively and responds in a timely, effective, positive and respectful manner; written reports and correspondence are accurate, complete, current; well-organized, legible, concise, neat, and in proper grammatical form. Ability to effectively present ideas orally and in writing. Effectively conveys information and expresses thoughts and facts clearly and timely, orally and in writing; demonstrates effective use of listening skills; displays openness to other people's ideas and thoughts.

    Part-time positions(less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City’s PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.

    Part-time employees may elect to contribute additional retirement savings through the City’s Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Additional Information on both plans can be found on the City’s website.
