    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two (2) years experience in building maintenance or repair, which included HVAC , plumbing, or electrical work.
    • One (1) year of relevant work experience may substitute for one (1) year of the required education with a maximum substitution of four (4) years.
    • Completion of approved course of training in air conditioning and refrigeration systems may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

    The Building Services Department is seeking a motivated and dependable individual to fill the role of Heating & Refrigeration Mechanic I. This is an entry-level position designed for those who are building a career in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning ( HVAC ), and refrigeration field. The selected candidate will assist in maintaining, repairing, and servicing HVAC and refrigeration systems across City-owned buildings and facilities.     Driving Requirement:
    This position requires a Texas Driver’s License in good standing or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

    Fair Labor Standards Act ( FLSA ) Classification:

    Overtime may be required with or without notice.

    Rotational on call and call back is required by the position.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • A valid Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation ( TDLR ) Technician License and EPA Universal Certification, or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    Operates acetylene cutting torch, welder, etc. Installs heating/air conditioning/refrigeration/ventilation equipment (I.e. mount compressors/condensers, cut/bend/join tubing, connect electrical wiring, inject freon, fit pipes, install thermostats etc.) Measures, cuts, and bends wire and conduit using rulers and hand tools. Reads profiles and blueprints. Repairs and replaces defective parts and components in heating/air conditioning/refrigeration/ventilation systems (I.e. motors, fans, wiring, condensers, evaporators, compressors, thermostats, etc.) Checks equipment for proper operation, safety, and/or needed maintenance. Operates soldering tools. Records data on appropriate form/log, etc. Performs basic service on pumps, air handlers, cooling towers, etc. Repacks, changes oil and filters, lubricates, etc.

    May provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training and guidance to others.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

    • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of steam boilers and related building plant equipment.
    • Knowledge of equipment and methods used in regulating and measuring pressures temperatures and factors related to heating equipment.
    • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety rules and regulations.
    • Knowledge of tools, materials and methods used in maintenance and repair of ventilation, refrigeration and air conditioning.
    • Knowledge of regulations and codes concerning heating and refrigeration systems.
    • Knowledge of basic electricity and plumbing.
    • Knowledge of water and heating system installation, maintenance and repair methods, tools and materials.
    • Knowledge of using reading and writing effectively to the level of task performed.
    • Knowledge of local ordinances and building codes.
    • Knowledge of departmental rules and regulations.
    • Knowledge of welding parts and high and low pressure steam vessels & pipes &of codes & regulations pertaining to such.
    • Skill in accurately reading instruments and/or meters and making accurate instruments recordings.
    • Skill in reading and interpreting sketches, machine drawings, plans and specifications and in laying out work.
    • Skill in performing manual labor and in handling equipment carefully.
    • Skill in performing emergency and routine repairs and maintenance as required.
    • Skill in understanding oral and written instructions.
    • Skill in operating hand drills, welding and soldering equipment etc.
    • Skill in reading and writing necessary to the level of tasks performed.
    • Skill in preparing rough sketches or work and estimates of materials and labor.
    • Skill in performing heavy manual work.
    • Skill in tracing and analyzing causes of plumbing and heating troubles and in making repairs.
