About the Role We are currently seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented
Custodian to join our team. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision. Previous custodial experience is preferred.
As a Custodian, you'll play a key role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of our facilities, supporting our mission to serve the community.
Position Details - Position Type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Benefits-Eligible
- Annual Salary: $58,616.88 - $71,249.28
- Schedule: 5-day workweek (Monday-Sunday)
- Hours: 2:30 AM - 10:00 AM (40 hours/week)
- Work Location: Multiple locations within the District
- Available Positions: 1

DEFINITION Under general supervision, to perform janitorial duties and to be responsible for the overall condition and proper use of District buildings and their facilities; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES Custodians, whose work is subject to infrequent inspection, perform janitorial duties in District buildings, the facilities of which are used continuously by the general public. The completion of cleaning work is made more difficult by the necessity of planning and performing such work around the activities that are taking place during such time that the incumbent is on duty. Positions in this class are distinguished from the next higher class, Custodial Foreman which has lead-supervisory responsibility and responsibility for supervision of the District custodial services.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES NOTE : The following list of duties are those usually performed by most employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.
- Sets up furniture in and prepares rooms and halls for social functions/classes/programs.
- Sweeps, mops, dusts, strips and waxes floors, frequently using power equipment; also vacuums, cleans rugs and cleans cooking stoves, ovens and refrigerators
- Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork.
- Washes windows inside and outside.
- Cleans all front and rear door entrances.
- Cleans and disinfects restrooms and keeps them supplied.
- Requisitions supplies needed to carry out the above duties.
- Reports vandalism, theft and forcible entry to Supervisor, and District Office, police if needed.
- Fills out vandalism forms, incident and accident forms.
- Reports items in need of repair.
- Fills out Building Inspection reports.
- Monitors building inventory of tables and chairs.
- Adhere to safe work practices as trained.
- Property label and secure products and chemicals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A combination of training and experience which demonstrates that a person has obtained the required knowledge and is able to perform the required work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed). A person with the following combined training and experience would typically qualify to compete in a selection process:
Experience:
The equivalent of six (6) months of full-time experience performing custodial work in offices or institutions.
License : Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license and a good driving record.
NOTE : The Civil Service Commission may modify the above minimum qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES NOTE : The level and scope of the following knowledge, skills and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.
Knowledge of:
- Modern custodial methods, materials, and equipment including the use of power-driven waxing and buffing machines, soaps, detergents, waxes and cleaning compounds.
Ability to:
- Follow standing instructions and accept responsibility.
- Read and write and clearly speak effectively.
- Read and follow safe use (MSDS) for all products, chemicals or equipment.
- Exhibit a high customer service priority.
- Establish and maintain open and honest communications with co-workers at all levels of the organization.
- Use and operate sanders, buffers, vacuum cleaners and similar equipment in the course of custodial duties.
- Within OSHA guidelines, withstand periods of physical exposure to the presence of fumes, odors, dust and pollen without incapacitating adverse effect.
- Safely transport, lift and handle bulky objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
