    Vacation & Sick Leave

    At the City of Buckeye, we understand the vital role that vacation time plays in supporting the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of our employees. Vacation and sick leave accruals begin on the first day of employment and may be used upon accrual. Additionally, employees receive credit towards vacation leave accruals for years of service with other public sector retirement systems nationwide (not including Federal service).

    Holidays

    The City of Buckeye observes eleven holidays per year: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

    Retirement
    This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Contribution is mandatory, and the current contribution rate is 12.27%, per fiscal year.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    GENERAL PURPOSE: Under direct supervision, this position supports the daily operations of the Joe Foss public shooting range. Responsibilities include assisting with safety monitoring, range setup, equipment maintenance, and customer service across all range areas - including the rile/pistol, pistol, trap and skeet, and archery ranges. This position plays a vital role in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors.

    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
    • Assists with daily setup and takedown of targets, clay throwers, barricades, signage, and equipment across rifle/pistol, pistol, trap and skeet, and archery ranges.
    • Monitors public use of all active range zones and supports safe operations by reinforcing established rules and responding to unsafe actions.
    • Ensures visitors follow safety protocols and provides basic safety briefings a needed.
    • After ceasefire is called, visually verifies that every firearm is in a range safe condition before allowing anyone to proceed downrange.
    • Assists with loading and maintaining trap and skeet machines, checking target alignment, and resting archery targets.
    • Maintains the cleanliness and functionality of all range facilities, including firing lines, walkways, target areas, and support spaces.
    • Provides on-site support during public programs, special events, and classes.
    • Communicates courteously and clearly with the public, responding to general questions about range rules, programming, and schedules.
    • Performs other duties as assigned or required.


    Minimum Qualifications & Position Requirements

    Education and Experience:

    High School diploma or GED with one (1) year experience in operation of public shooting range; the implementation or supervision of recreation programs or activities required; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. College level coursework in Recreation, Recreation Administration, Leisure Studies or related area preferred.

    Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:
    • City policies and procedures.
    • Basic firearm, shotgun, and archery safety practices.
    • Public recreation procedures and safety protocols.

    Skill in:
    • Interpreting and applying City policies and procedures.
    • Communicating clearly and respectfully with the public and coworkers.
    • Learning and performing basic maintenance of trap and machines, archery targets, and range equipment.
    • Identifying and reporting safety concerns or equipment issues.
    • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with citizen groups, outside organizations and other government agencies and City departments.
    • Operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of business software.
    • Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.

    Ability to:
    • Work effectively as part of a team in an active outdoor environment.
    • Interact with participants in a professional and safety-focused manner.
    • Maintain awareness and composure in high-responsibility safety situations.


    12-Month Goals:
    • Develop proficiency in range set-up and equipment support
      • Learn to independently set up and take down rifle/pistol, pistol, trap and skeet, and archery ranges, and assist with routine maintenance tasks such as wooden target repair and clay thrower support.
    • Reinforce range safety and ceasefire procedures
      • Demonstrate consistent understanding and application of safety protocols, including visually verifying that all firearms are in a safe condition during ceasefires.
    • Build confidence in visitor interaction and communication
      • Independently welcome and orient at least 25 new visitors by explaining range rules and answering basic safety questions in a calm, professional manner.


    Additional Information

    Special Requirements: Possession of a Valid Arizona Driver’s License. NRA Range Safety Officer Certification; NASP Basic Archery Instructor or Level 1 USA Archery Level 1 Instructor Certification; First Aid and CPR certification. All staff are required to learn, understand, and correctly follow the facility’s range commands.
    Days of Week Worked: Thursday - Sunday

    Physical Demands / Work Environment: Must be able to work in outdoor environments, including prolonged exposure to heat, dust, and other desert conditions. Requires the ability to lift and carry heavy objects.

    Reports To: Shooting Range Master

    Supervision Exercised: Part-time staff, and volunteers

    FLSA Status: Non-exempt
