    Overview

    Shape the Future of Larimer County as Our Next County Building Official!

    Larimer County is looking for an experienced and forward-thinking County Building Official to lead our Building Division within the Community Development Department. This role oversees building code development, permitting, plan review, and inspections, ensuring safe, high-quality development in both urban and rural areas.
    As a key leader, you’ll set standards for customer service and innovation, guide policy decisions, and collaborate across departments and with the public. This is a unique opportunity to influence sustainable growth in a region known for its commitment to community and quality of life.

    Schedule: 8 am - 4:30 pm Monday-Friday. This position m ay need to attend night hearings and meetings. On-call after hours in the event of a local disaster or emergency.

    Responsibilities

    What you'll be doing:
    • Leading the Building Division with a focus on aligning operations with department and countywide goals.
    • Overseeing permitting, plan reviews, and inspections to ensure compliance with building codes and safety standards.
    • Supervising and mentoring a team of inspectors, plans examiners, technicians, and supervisors.
    • Developing policies and performance standards that improve efficiency, safety, and customer service.
    • Serving as the County’s go-to expert on building code interpretation and enforcement.
    • Collaborating with internal teams, elected officials, and community partners to support shared initiatives.
    • Staying ahead of trends in construction, sustainability, and regulations to guide future strategy.

    What we're looking for:
    • Extensive knowledge of building codes, construction methods, safety regulations, and permitting processes.
    • Proven leadership and management experience, preferably in a public-sector setting, with the ability to build a strong team culture and lead cross-functional teams.
    • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, especially in high-pressure or politically sensitive situations.
    • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with customers, elected officials, community stakeholders, and internal teams.
    • Customer-focused mindset, committed to delivering efficient, responsive, and solutions-oriented service to homeowners, contractors, and other customers.
    • Experience with permitting and inspection software systems, digital plan review platforms, and modernizing workflows through technology.


    Qualifications

    • Eight (8) years of experience in permitting, plan review, building inspection, code compliance, design and/or construction required.
    • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience in construction management, engineering, architecture, or a related field required. A combination of education and/or experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.
    • Possession of a valid driver's license by date of hire required.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, ICC certifications as a Plans Examiner and a Building Inspector within one year required.
