    The Job

    The Department of Public Health (DPH), Animal Care Division, is seeking compassionate and dedicated Kennel Attendants to join our Animal Care Team in providing essential care for animals in need. This role involves routine manual labor in both shelter and field environments. This is a hands-on role ideal for individuals who are passionate about animal welfare and comfortable working in a physically active environment.

    Key responsibilities include:
    • Cleaning and disinfecting kennels, cat cages, livestock corrals, equipment, and work areas
    • Feeding and watering animals
    • Administering medications as needed and monitoring animal behavior and health
    • Assisting Animal Control Officers with animal impounds
    • Supervising multi-animal playgroups and providing treats
    • Walking, playing with, and bathing dogs and cats
    • Transporting animals to veterinary clinics for spay/neuter procedures
    • Maintaining forms, logs, and shelter database records
    • Answering basic questions from the public and assisting with animal adoptions procedures
    • Performing general maintenance and upkeep around the shelter
    • Assist with orienting new volunteers on procedures and policies
    • Provide reception and administrative coverage as needed

    Field-related duties may include:
    • Delivering and retrieving animal traps and related paperwork
    • Picking up deceased animals
    • Transporting livestock as needed
    • Administering vaccinations to stray animals

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    • Animal Euthanasia: Please be aware, shelters currently participates in humane euthanasia of sick, injured, or unadopted impounded animals. Incumbents will be required to be certified on humane euthanasia upon hire.
    • Physical: Requires frequent standing and walking; frequent stooping and bending; and the ability to lift and restrain small to very large animals, both domestic and wild, which may weigh up to 100 pounds. Additionally, these positions require work in inclement weather.
    • Travel & Driver License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
    • Work Schedule: Must be available to work weekends. Shift schedule may be 4-10 hour shifts as follows: 8:00am - 6:30pm Sunday - Wednesday OR 8:00am - 6:30pm Wednesday - Saturday.
    • Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.
    • Visa Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require Visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States at the time of employment.


    Minimum Requirements

    Education Requirement: High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent.

    AND

    Experience Requirement:
    Applicants must have either:
    • Six (6) months of full-time experience in general public contact or customer service; OR
    • Three (3) months of full-time equivalent experience in animal care and handling within an animal control or regulatory agency, veterinary clinic, animal care facility, or animal hospital. Volunteer experience is considered qualifying.


    Desired Qualifications

    General experience in any field, willingness to learn, customer service skills, office etiquette and positive attitude are highly desirable. Experience in animal behavior, cat/dog training or working with animals in a shelter or other animal care environments is preferred.
