    Description

    WHAT WE OFFER
    • Educational Incentive - An educational incentive of 2.5% for completion of an associate degree, 3.5% for completion of a bachelor degree, OR 5% for completion of a graduate degree.
    • Bilingual Incentive - Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational needs and certification skills.
    • Vacation Accrual - Initially 14 days per year; after approximately 5 years of service increasing to 19 days a year; after approximately 11 years increasing to 20 days per year and then increasing 1 day a year through 15 years of service; topping out at 26 days per year after approximately 20 years of service with a maximum accumulation of 400 hours.
    • Annual Leave Redemption - After 14,560 hours (equivalent to 7 years) of continuous County service the ability to "cash in" or redeem up to 80 hours of vacation accrued in the same year after using 80 hours of vacation in the preceding 12 months.
    • Deferred Compensation - Eligible to participate in the County's 401(k) Shared Savings Plan and/or the Section 457 Plan. This position is eligible for up to a 3% match on your 401(k) contributions.
    • Health Plans - You are afforded a flexible credit allowance for purchasing medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from a group of authorized plans. For Plan Year 2025 tier one for employee only is $509 per pay period, tier two for employee plus one is $779 per pay period and tier three for employee plus family is $983 per pay period.
    • Flexible Spending Accounts - Choice of participation in the Flexible Spending Accounts which increase spending power through reimbursement of pre-tax dollars for IRS approved dependent care and health care expenses.
    • Holidays - 12 paid days per year which includes a scheduled floating holiday.
    THE DEPARTMENT
    The County of Ventura Fire Department is committed to excellence, delivered with pride. Our response area includes more than 840,000 people in the unincorporated areas of Ventura County and seven of its cities: Ojai, Port Hueneme, Moorpark, Camarillo, Santa Paula, Simi Valley, and Thousand Oaks.

    Comprised of approximately 658 dedicated personnel, the Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) is an all-hazard, full-service district. VCFD's services are built around our mission of anticipating and responding to the dynamic public safety needs of our diverse community. This includes prevention and education, response and communication. We proudly provide fire protection, medical aid, rescue, hazardous materials response, and a variety of other services to the public. Formed in 1928 as a special district, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors acts as the Fire Department's Board of Directors.

    THE POSITION
    Under general supervision, the Parts Specialist performs procurement, storage, inventory tracking, and issuance of replacement parts, and accessories.

    AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Fire Protection District

    Parts Specialist is represented by Service Employees International Union (SEIU) 721 and is eligible for overtime compensation.

    The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies in the Fire Protection District (FPD). There is currently one (1) regular vacancy in FPD.

    Examples Of Duties

    Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
    • Orders, receives, stores and issues parts and accessories for automotive, heavy truck, construction, trailers, and fire apparatus.
    • Maintains records of parts used, maintain logs, vendor files, parts catalogs, inventory records and credit card reconciliation.
    • Orders substitute parts on the basis of knowledge of interchangeability.
    • Researches and determines best price available consistent with quality and issues purchase orders to vendors by telephone and personal contact.
    • Ensures proper inventory controls and maintains stocks to required levels.
    • Ensures proper funding of purchase orders, signs for merchandise and locates suppliers of hard to find items.
    • Monitors equipment and/or vehicle replacement list to maintain appropriate parts inventory.
    • Removes obsolete parts and equipment from inventory and prepares them for surplus or return to vendor.
    • Prepares various reports.
    • Performs other related duties as required.


    Typical Qualifications

    These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE:
    Considerable experience performing procurement, storage, inventory tracking, and issuance of replacement parts, equipment, supplies and accessories which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    The required knowledge, skills, and abilities can also be obtained by at least three (3) years of experience performing procurement, storage, inventory tracking and issuance of replacement parts, equipment, supplies and accessories.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver license with a satisfactory driving record.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a forklift certification within six (6) months of hire.
    • Must have full range of mobility including the ability to safely lift heavy objects and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
    DESIRED:
    Four (4) or more years of experience:
    • Negotiating competitive pricing with vendors;
    • Providing excellent customer service.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Working knowledge of:
    • Parts, materials, supplies for automotive, heavy truck, construction, trailers, and fire apparatus;
    • Principles and practices of inventory management/control, purchasing & customer service;
    • Safety principles and practices;
    • State and federal health and safety rules and procedures;
    • Computer operating software and procedures (e.g. MS Office, Excel).
    Ability to:
    • Follow oral and written instructions;
    • Effectively and ethically deal with vendors in pricing and securing parts and supplies;
    • Make accurate computations;
    • Use computer based inventory tracking software and business office software (e.g. MS Office, Excel);
    • Order in a manner which assures proper stock levels;
    • Organize and utilize space to a maximum in an orderly manner consistent with all safety practices;
    • Lift, carry and store heavy items safely;
    • Operate and use business equipment (computer, printer), warehouse equipment (forklift);
    • Establish and maintain effective working and public relations;
    • Develop and maintain a knowledge of catalogs, warehousing and inventory control procedures.

    SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE - qualifying : All applicants are required to complete and submit the questionnaire for this exam AT THE TIME OF FILING. The supplemental questionnaire may be used throughout the examination process to assist in determining each applicant's qualifications and acceptability for the position. Failure to complete and submit the questionnaire will result in the application being removed from consideration.

    APPLICATION EVALUATION - qualifying: All applications will be reviewed to determine whether or not the stated requirements are met. Those individuals meeting the stated requirements will be invited to continue to the next step in the screening and selection process.

    WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100%: An un-proctored, internet-based job-related written exam will be conducted to evaluate participating candidates' knowledge of arithmetic, inventory, warehousing and store-keeping, workplace behavior, safety, and parts recognition. Candidates must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

    Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
