The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhance the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Lifeguardto join its Recreation & Wellness team. The potential candidate will play a key role in the following duties:
- Observe pool participants to ensure safety, accessibility, and pool for citizens in accordance with established safety guidelines.
- Assist with special events and other activities for all participants.
- Provide basic facility and program information on activities and services.
- Ensure participants complete and have on file HPARD release forms, physician's approval forms and other required documentation.
- Maintain and operate pool maintenance and safety equipment and other adaptive aquatic equipment.
- Monitor pool for proper chemical balance, water and air temperature, and relative humidity percentages.
- Provide assistance when necessary, in implementing recreation sponsored activities or programs including instructing aquatics exercise classes and other aquatic activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS Must possess excellent swimming skills. This position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or equivalent weight) may be required. There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heart, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve routine to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and basic written instructions. Must have a basic knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation. May require a basic knowledge of a particular subject area.
LICENSE/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: Must be certified in Lifeguard Training or Water Safety instruction and First Aid/CPR.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: No experience is required
PREFERENCES**Eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.***
Preference will be given to the following applicants: - Applicants with a valid Texas Driver's License will be highly preferred.
- Applicants with a high school diploma, GED or above
