Our Dental Clinic provides preventive services for children from birth to twenty years and restorative treatments for children aged three to twenty years, averaging 6,500 patient visits annually. The clinic serves Medicaid and uninsured low-income children, offering a sliding fee scale based on household income.
The clinic participates in the annual Give Kids A Smile program and conducts community outreach, including dental screenings for North Carolina Pre-K children in Wake County. It received the Delta Dental Foundation Smiles for Kids Program Grant in 2024, providing over 332 sealants for 133 children. Since October 2017, the clinic has also benefited from the Community Health Medical Access Program grant from the NC DHHS, enabling nearly 6,000 preventive dental visits at no cost for children aged 0 to 20 years.
As a Dental Assistant , you will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive and emergency dental treatment to the qualified citizens of Wake County. Your responsibilities will include chair-side dental assisting with a dentist, performing coronal polishing, and assisting with various dental procedures. Your workload will be determined by the patient appointment schedule, and you will also provide guidance to dental students, dental assisting students, and dental hygiene students. This position reports directly to the Dental Assistant Supervisor.
Key responsibilities of the Dental Assistant are:
- Provide direct patient care, including proficient four-handed dentistry
- Expose, develop, and mount radiographs
- Prepare patients for dental providers (dentist, hygienist, or dental student)
- Dismiss patients and provide post-operative instructions as directed by the dentist
- Maintain proper infection control and sterilization protocols
- Apply dental sealants, perform coronal polishing, and apply fluoride varnish
- Handle and use various dental materials during restorative procedures

The Basics (Required Education and Experience) - High school diploma or GED
- Graduate of an ADA accredited dental assisting program, or DANB certification
- Six months of experience as a dental assistant
- CPR, Dental X ray certification
- Coronal polishing certification
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience) - Experience with Dentrix Patient Management Software
- Spanish Language Skills preferred but not required
- At least 1 year experience in a pediatric dental setting
How Will We Know You're 'The One'? - Ability to stay active/current CPR certification
- Ability to stay abreast on latest dental techniques and materials as well as infection control standards for the dental setting as specified by the CDC, OSHA and other regulation entities
- Ability to complete necessary encounters and charts accurately to document services rendered to patients
- Ability to Coronal polishing certificate or equivalent
- Knowledge of dental materials
- Ability to assist dentist in restorative dental procedures
- Knowledge of proper infection control/sterilization procedures
- Knowledge of exposing, processing, & mounting dental radiograph
