    Environmental Services has an opportunity for an Environmental Engineer in the Watershed Management Section of the Water Quality Division. This position performs technical review of development plans for stormwater management, sedimentation and erosion control and floodplain compliance for County and certain municipal projects. The position will also respond to customer calls regarding permits and provides training and technical assistance to staff, applicants, designers, contractors, cooperating agencies, and the public. The position will sometimes require collaboration with applicants to achieve compliance. This individual is often the first person to work with applicants and should be ready to assist them with guidance and advice.

    About Our Team

    The Wake County Environmental Services Division of Water Quality educates the public, issues environmental permits, enforces environmental rules and regulations to protect soil and water resources; and leads initiatives on water and environmental sustainability throughout the County. The Division functions at a nationally recognized level and accomplishes its tasks through robust and customer-centric programs in watershed management and water resources. Water Quality is one of the four divisions in Wake County Environmental Services Department that also houses the Administration, Animal Services, Solid Waste divisions.

    The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science or related field
    • Three years of experience in environmental planning, inspections or engineering
    • NC Professional Engineer (PE) in civil or related engineering discipline
    • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
    • Equivalent education and experience are NOT accepted


    Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

    • Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
    • Certified Professional in Stormwater Quality (CPSWQ)
    • Registered Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM)
    • Possesses at least one year of plan review experience with a state or local government

    • Detail oriented with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Excellent ability to communicate effectively in written and oral formats, and to explain technical specifications and negotiate with stakeholders
    • Excellent listening skills to understand a customer perspective and provide services that meet expectations
    • Excellent ability to complete work on projects that have multiple people and organizations involved
    • Strong knowledge of rules, design principles and methods to control sedimentation and erosion and mitigate stormwater runoff
    • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design of water-related projects

    Emergency Service Worker Statement
