    CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Registered Dietitian

    UNION CODE: R02

    TEMPORARY END DATE: This position is temporary and ends on or before June 30, 2026. Any continuation beyond June 30, 2026 is contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funding.

    FT/PT: Full-time

    PAY PLAN: This is a 10/12 pay-plan designated position. Employees appointed on this 10/12 pay-plan position work 10 months of the year and receive the months of June and July off. Employees are paid an amount equal to 10 months’ salary over a period of twelve months.

    WORKPLACE TYPE: On-site (work in-person at business location)

    CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE: $3,633 - $7,011

    PAY BASIS: Monthly

    POSITION PURPOSE: The Mission of Student Health Services is to build a healthy campus community by providing quality, caring, cost effective ambulatory healthcare and health promotion services. As part of an institution of higher learning, Student Health Services participates in the educational process by teaching students the skills for self-care, promoting their health, advocating for themselves and preventing diseases- thus enhancing their academic productivity leading to a satisfying college experience.

    The Registered Dietitian, under general direction of the Associate Director, develops and implements a variety of health education programs around nutrition and wellness. The Registered Dietitian ensures that students are educated through outreach, individual patient counseling and group counseling, workshops and special events, class instruction, internships, peer education, and collaboration with other campus and community partners. Additionally, the Registered Dietitian assesses students for data to use in developing these various programs and evaluates student learning outcomes.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Outreach and Education
    • Design outreaches on a range of nutrition and health topics reflective of the needs of college students
    • Coordinate with other departments on and off campus to expand outreach efforts
    • Provide/create nutrition and health content for social media and website
    • Prepare nutrition and health education materials and signage throughout the Student Health Services building, and materials provided at outreach and presentations
    • Maintain an inventory of nutrition and health education materials for group & counseling purposes, and for the library and waiting room
    • Promote/advertise outreach efforts

    Presentations/Special Events
    • Through class instruction and individual department requests, educate students on nutrition and wellness
    • Create presentations on various nutritional care topics, and conduct nutrition talks for various classes, programs, and departments
    • Participate in new student orientation and resource fairs, and other events around campus and in the community
    • Collaborate with departments such as the Housing, Student Recreation Center, and Athletics, to offer workshops around nutrition and exercise, eat healthy living on campus and special athlete diets
    • Collaborate with other areas on campus, such as Food Services, Food Pantry, Edible Garden to offer workshops, demonstrations, and special events

    Individual and Group Counseling
    • Work with students individually to modify poor nutrition practices, create meal plans, offer nutritional care for specific medical conditions, diseases, or disorders, or any other nutrition/ weight management needs
    • Individual nutrition counseling with students who are referred for eating disorders
    • Chart in the patient’s electronic medical record
    • Plan and facilitate group instruction and special workshops on food, diet, weight management, and other nutritional care topics
    • Collaborate with the Counseling Center to offer group counseling around eating disorders, stress eating, and other nutrition and mental health topics
    • Develop referral system for other offices such as SRC, Housing, basic needs, athletics and from SHS MD’s
    • Individual nutrition counseling with students who are referred

    Assessment/Evaluation
    • Create and administer surveys at the conclusion of nutrition outreach to assess student learning outcomes
    • Conduct national surveys for benchmark purposes
    • Prepare IRB submissions
    • Write needs assessments
    • Create assessment plans and reports for each outreach utilizing an assessment

    Peer Education and Internship
    • Conduct trainings with peer educators
    • Collaborate with peer educators for groups, workshops, etc.
    • Supervise internship students
    • Sit on the Student Health Advisory Committee

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE - Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a program approved and accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The RD credential also requires completion of an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics accredited preprofessional experience program. Additionally, incumbents must possess sufficient experience to perform the assigned duties.

    LICENSES - Possess and maintain certification as a Registered Dietitian as defined by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) -
    • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
    • Thorough knowledge of the principles of nutrition, dietary needs and weight control; applicable state and federal regulations pertaining to the field including those regarding patient confidentiality.
    • Working knowledge of nutritional care for specific medical conditions. General knowledge of principles, methods, materials, and channels of nutrition education and public information.
    • Ability to assess needs and evaluate the effectiveness of diet and nutrition programs and materials.
    • Ability to promote, organize, and conduct public meetings on nutrition; prepare, select, assemble, evaluate, and distribute nutrition education material such as pamphlets, reports, bulletins, exhibits, posters, films, and news releases; maintain records and prepare reports.
    • Ability to work effectively in collaborative health care teams to address specific diet and nutrition needs; keep current with developments in health care related to nutrition; and maintain confidentiality consistent with applicable state and federal regulations.
    • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism
    • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
    • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
    • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
    • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
    • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
    • Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
    • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
    • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
    • Must be able to work occasional holidays and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: SEDENTARY WORK - involves mainly sitting; minimal walking and standing; lifting light weight objects limited to 15 pounds.
