The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. Position Duties

Salary range(s) for this classification is $70,171.92 - $ 85,307.04 annually . This salary range(s) includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

The Department of Public Works is currently seeking to fill two (2) Animal Services Officers positions in the Animal Care and Services (ACS) Division. Animal Services Officers are responsible for performing field and enforcement duties in support of the city’s animal care and services program. This position will be responsible for providing a nimal s ervices and a nimal c ontrol duties as assigned. An Animal Services Officer enforces California State laws and local municipal codes governing the vaccination, licensing, restraint, impoundment, care, and quarantine of animals.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Handl ing and car ing for animals humanely and safely, including aggressive animals ;
  

• D riv ing an Animal Services vehicle to provide routine patrol and emergency rescue services throughout the service area ;
  

• I mpounding and transporting sick, injured, de ceased and stray or owned animals ;
  

• I ssuing warning notices and citations;
  

• E ducating the public on regulations and proper care and restraint of animals;
  

• Q uarantining biting animals;
  

• C onducting investigations and inspections ;
  

• P reparing reports and issuing permits ;
  

Animal Services Officers are required to work weekends, holidays, nights, rotating shifts, and respond to emergency Animal Services assignments during off-duty hours. Th ese positions are exposed to unpredictable working conditions , including but not limited to loud noise levels, moving mechanical parts, inclement weather conditions, confined workspaces, toxic or caustic chemicals, hazardous physical substances, fumes, odors, gases, dust, and air contaminants, blood borne pathogens while using hypodermic needles on animals, and animal scratches and bites.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate).

Required Licensing: Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.

Certifications

• Incumbents are required to complete P.C. 832 (Level 1), and courses in the use of pepper spray and the use of a baton within one (1) year following employment.
  

• Incumbents are required to complete Euthanasia b y Injection training within one (1) year following employment.
  

Background Check: This position requires clearance of a third-party background check .

Physical Requirements: Incumbents may be required to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects (such as animals and equipment) up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment.

Desirable Qualification s : Previous law enforcement , professional animal care , and/or customer service experience.

• Valid certifications and trainings related to Animal Control and Services.
