THE CITY OF JOHN DAY
The City of John Day operates under a Council-Manager form of government and serves a resident population of 1,700 over 1.7 square miles, and a much higher daytime population. The City with an annual budget of $6.9 million and a staffing level of 11 FTEs has been budgeted for 2025. The City is advancing several transformative initiatives in 2025–2026, led by a $30 million wastewater treatment plant project now moving into design and procurement. The City continues to invest in long-term community vitality through downtown revitalization, Innovation Gateway development, broadband expansion, riverfront trail enhancements, and public safety services. Strategic staffing increases and equipment upgrades support operational needs across water, sewer, and storm utilities. These initiatives, supported by a balanced budget and grant funding, reflect a commitment to sustainable growth, infrastructure modernization, and quality of life improvements for residents and future generations.
THE PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR
Reporting to the City Manager, the Public Works Director is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, planning, and operations of the City of John Day’s Public Works Department. The Director oversees streets, water and wastewater collection and treatment, stormwater management, parks, facilities, fleet management, and public spaces. The Director serves as a key member of the City's management team and maintains regular communication with the City Manager, elected officials, and the community.
