The Position
Criminal Investigators perform criminal investigations involving violations of federal and/or State law. The investigative process is initiated following a formal request for services or as a coordinated effort with federal, State, or local law enforcement and criminal justice agencies. Criminal Investigators utilize standard investigative and law enforcement techniques.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.
The Department of Corrections is seeking to fill a Criminal Investigator 1 located in Las Vegas. Under the direction of the Inspector General, this investigator will be responsible for conducting specialized investigations regarding any complaints, grievances, allegations or reports on other matters that could impact the Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC). The investigator will conduct a thorough, complete and objective investigation of all assigned complaints and/or allegations of misconduct by NDOC staff and/or inmates. Responsibilities include conducting investigations and examinations of alleged violations of law, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. The incumbent will identify, contact and interview potential suspects, witnesses, and complainants. They will collect data and conduct field studies, perform undercover or surveillance work regarding suspected violators, evaluate and document investigative findings. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, police science, or closely related field; OR high school graduation or equivalent (GED) and two years of criminal investigative and law enforcement experience involving standard investigative and enforcement techniques utilized to enforce State and federal laws, preparation of detailed investigative reports, and implementation of agency program goals and objectives. Work experience may be obtained in a law enforcement, investigative or comparable setting; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Notes Applicant must meet current Peace Officer Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code. A quarterly qualifying score of 70 or better with a firearm will be required. Incumbents must obtain and maintain POST Category I certification as a condition of continuing employment, except positions assigned to the Secretary of State's Office and the Department of Corrections that must obtain and maintain a minimum of POST Category II certification as a condition of continuing employment. Special Requirements A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
The Nevada Legislature has honored the State's natural resources and cultural heritage with a variety of State designations described below.
