The Position
Safety Specialists promote recognized safety practices among businesses covered by federal and State safety and health laws and regulations. Incumbents identify or train others to identify safety and health hazards and violations, and recommend reasonable and feasible means of abatement; research specific technology and industry applications using technical references and consensus codes and standards; prepare written reports and/or training materials; make public presentations to promote knowledge of safety issues among the public and industry groups; and maintain current knowledge of new technologies, standards, codes, rules and regulations.
The Division of Industrial Relations is seeking to fill a Safety Representative Consultation (underfill for a Safety Specialist) in Las Vegas. This position will be a part of the Nevada Safety Consultation and Training Section (NV SCATS). The incumbent will promote best safety practices and educate employers on State and Federal safety laws and regulations. Primary responsibilities include conducting consultation surveys, informal training, safety program development, and identifying and recommending solutions for complex safety and health hazards. Additionally, this position will be assigned technical assistance days and will answer safety and health questions via phone, email, and/or walk-ins.*** THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in occupational safety and health, safety engineering, or related field and one year of experience in at least three of the following areas: hazard identification, hazard evaluation in relation to existing standards, hazard control design, hazard controls verification, safety/health program design, and safety/health program evaluation; OR Bachelor's degree in environmental, biological or physical sciences, public health, or engineering and two years of experience as described above; OR certification as an Associate in Loss Control Management, Associate Safety Professional, Occupational Safety and Health Technologist, or Associate Safety and Health Manager and two years of experience as described above; OR municipal, State, or national instructor certification in safety and health, hazardous materials, environmental sciences, fire science, or related field and two years of experience as described above; OR one year of experience as a Safety Associate, Consultation - DIR or Safety Associate, Enforcement - DIR in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience described above. Special Requirements A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
The Nevada Legislature has honored the State's natural resources and cultural heritage with a variety of State designations described below.
