The Department

The Department of Early Childhood Studies is in the College of Education, Counseling, and Ethnic Studies. The department offers an undergraduate major in Early Childhood Studies, undergraduate minors in Early Childhood Studies and in Education, and a Master of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education. The mission of the department is to prepare knowledgeable and caring professionals who are committed to contributing to a just society through high-quality education and social services for all children and families. This commitment to social justice underpins our work and serves as the foundation of our curriculum.

Coursework in the undergraduate major and minor emphasizes socially and environmentally just practices, culturally responsive care and education, inclusive care and education, play as the cornerstone of healthy development, family engagement, assessment of child growth and learning, and leadership and advocacy. Students learn how to use theories and research from anthropology, child development, education, health, psychology, sociology, and multicultural studies to promote the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development of diverse young children. Undergraduates who complete their BA degrees with an Early Childhood Studies major or minor typically go on to work in the field of early care and education, enroll in a Multiple Subject or Special Education Credential program, or pursue a graduate degree in education or social services.

The Master of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education is designed for students who wish to pursue advanced study in Child Development and Early Care and Education. With a growing emphasis at the federal and state levels on the importance of high-quality education during the preschool and primary years, the M.A. in Early Childhood Education prepares teachers to qualify for the California Child Development Permit at the Multi-site Director level. For candidates who hold a clear teaching credential, graduate credits may count as professional development units for salary advancement in your school district, for credential renewal, and for child development units to meet eligibility requirements for teaching in TK classrooms.

Duties of the Position

1. Teach courses in the Early Childhood Studies major and minor programs in alignment with the ECS departmental teaching expectations.

2. Respond to student needs in a sensitive, timely, and appropriate manner

3. Create a positive and inclusive learning environment to foster student belonging, engagement, and success

4. Participate in program assessment activities as requested and required

5. Participate in periodic department and school-wide meetings and functions

6. Utilize SSU's online learning management system and other educational technology as appropriate for teaching and program assessment purposes

7. Maintain currency in the Early Childhood field, in educational technology, and in diversity and social justice issues as they relate to Early Childhood Studies and higher education

8. Anticipated workload is 3-6 units.

Required Qualifications

To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have :

Experience working with and understanding of children and families in a diverse context: ethnicity, immigration status, language, socioeconomic status, ability, and family structure.

Demonstrated currency in child development theory and practice

Explicit commitment to social justice enactment and educational equity

At least three years of paid direct work (or equivalent experience) with children within the birth to eight age range. Please note that some courses, such as supervision courses and child life specialist courses, may have specific experience requirements in their respective professions.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment

Excellent oral, written, and digital communication skills (through application letter and interview)

Earned Master's or Doctoral degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Early Elementary Literacy, or relevant field.

Additional qualification that will be considered

Experience teaching at the college or university level

Experience teaching in an online environment

Knowledge of a second language, either working knowledge or fluency

Rank and Salary

Full-time is a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary is dependent upon the number of units assigned, educational preparation, and availability of funds subject to any CSU system faculty contract salary increases.

• Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
• Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5,507 - $6,677 per full-time month.
• The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
• Selection as a candidate in the applicant pool, does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon department needs and funding.
• Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
• Relocation expenses will not be provided for temporary faculty appointments.
• Expenses incurred to attend an interview for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.
