    Position Description
    The Department of Mathematics at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Statistics at the Assistant Professor level with the appointment to begin in August 2026.

Candidates for this position must have a solid theoretical and applied background in statistics and a passion for teaching and research. The successful candidate will contribute to the statistics community at Cal State Fullerton through teaching, research, professional activities, and service.

    Responsibilities include:
    • Teaching a wide spectrum of theoretical and applied courses in statistics and data science at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
    • Conducting research resulting in publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals within a collaborative faculty-student environment
    • Mentoring students and guiding them towards post-graduation success
    • Contributing to curriculum development by incorporating modern statistical and data science approaches to existing courses or creating new courses
    • Serving on departmental and university-wide committees

    A successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in a transdisciplinary Titan Supercomputing Center and contribute to the growth of the Statistical Consulting Center within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

    Required Qualifications
    The successful candidate must:
    • Have earned a Ph.D. in statistics or a related field. All degree requirements must be completed prior to the starting date
    • Have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring students
    • Have a well-defined research agenda

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Teaching experience with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching students of diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds at the undergraduate and graduate levels
    • Be able to contribute to undergraduate and graduate curriculum development
    • Evidence of the potential to supervise undergraduate and master's level students in research
    • Evidence of or a strong interest in participating in interdisciplinary, collaborative research
    • Plan for seeking internal and external funding

    Statistics at CSU Fullerton
    The statistics faculty research areas include Bayesian statistics, statistical computing, spatial statistics, experimental design, and survival analysis. Faculty are active in application areas of neuroscience, geology, biostatistics, psychometrics, epidemiology, bioengineering, and finance. The Titan Supercomputing Center provides high-performance computing to support faculty research. The statistics undergraduate program includes courses in probability theory, stochastic processes, statistical modeling, and statistical learning. The M.S. in Statistics program serves the growing demand in the workforce for professionals with knowledge and training in data science and quantitative analysis. Moreover, the program prepares students interested in graduate studies at the Ph.D. level. The M.S. courses are conducted synchronously in person and via a two-way stream on the Internet.

    The Mathematics Department
    The Mathematics Department has 36 tenured or tenure-track faculty members and offers an undergraduate degree program with concentrations in Statistics, Actuarial Science, Teaching Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Applied Mathematics. We also offer minors in Data Science, Mathematics, and Teaching Secondary and Elementary Mathematics. The department also offers the following graduate degree programs: M.S. in Statistics, M.S. in Applied Mathematics and M.A. in Teaching Mathematics.

    Extra-curricular activity is an integral part of our department culture. We maintain a strong student research presence at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, and our Putnam Team regularly scores in the top quartile. We are considered a leader in cutting-edge and inclusive pedagogical practices. Our faculty often pursue and are awarded grants to fund efforts to support our students.

    Compensation
    The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $6,221 to $13,224 monthly (12 monthly payments per academic year). The anticipated hiring range is $7,206 to $7,350 per month.

    Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work ( https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm).

    Summer research grants, moving expenses, start-up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
