PURPOSE OF THE POSITION These positions are responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and directing the daily activities of work crews within the Storm Sewer Maintenance Section of the Stormwater Operations Branch. The individual(s) will monitor operations to identify and resolve issues related to staffing, equipment, and procedures, while also recommending and implementing improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Responsibilities include preparing, managing, and routing work orders to the appropriate departments or teams, as well as providing training and guidance to new employees to ensure safe and consistent work practices. The role also involves supporting daily operations as needed, including performing fieldwork and operating a City vehicle to carry out assigned tasks.
WORKING CONDITIONS The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There are routine significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. Requires the ability to make coordinated gross motor movements in response to changing external stimuli within moderately demanding tolerances: or the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within low tolerance demands with no real speed requirements. This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and simple mathematical functions like percentages, ratios, etc. as might normally be acquired through attainment of a high school diploma or a GED.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Four years of progressively responsible work experience in the maintenance field are required.
Substitution:
A Bachelor's degree in a related field may be substituted for the experience required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Requires a valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2-2).
PREFERENCES **Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such people possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such people are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.** Preference will be given to individuals with:
- Experience in ditch maintenance and/or stormwater maintenance
- Supervisory experience
- Intermediate to advanced computer and application proficiency
- Experience in operating and maintaining storm water systems (i.e. storm sewers, inlets, manholes, detention ponds, roadside/off-road ditches and related equipment)
- Experience using CityWorks/IMS data
- Experience with GIS
