PURPOSE OF THE POSITION This individual will plan, coordinate, and direct the activities of groups of workers within the field maintenance For Traffic Operations Section of the Pavement Markings Branch. Will ensure that employees have adequate work supplies and properly functioning equipment to perform assigned tasks. Analyze and resolve staff, equipment and operating problems and recommend changes to increase efficiency. Prepare, coordinate, update, and/or refer work orders to the appropriate entity. Creates work orders for every job that will be performed by your direct reports, review each work order to ensure completeness and accuracy with minimal errors. Input all recorded information into City Works, track and close all completed work orders daily. Monitor and evaluate work crews' performance daily. Reviews operations policies and procedures recommends changes to increase efficiency and implements approved changes. Trains new employees. Oversees preventive maintenance of assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools. Provides leadership to subordinates and motivational tools needed to promote growth within the organization.
WORKING CONDITIONS The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture/wetness and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and simple mathematical functions like percentages, ratios, etc. as might normally be acquired through attainment of a high school diploma or a GED.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Four years of progressively responsible work experience in the maintenance field are required.
Substitution:
A Bachelor's degree in a related field may be substituted for the experience required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Requires a valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2-2).
PREFERENCES **Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such people possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such people are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.** Preference will be given to individuals with:
- Experience in ditch maintenance and heavy machine operation (Gradall) and/or vegetation management experience.
