    Introduction

    THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year, but can be extended.

    Supplemental Questionnaire : A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing. Failure to submit the Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification.

    DESCRIPTION

    MISSION STATEMENT

    The mission of the Alameda County Probation Department is to protect the public safety by providing supervision, services, support and opportunities to our clients on behalf of the people of Alameda County through quality supervision, leadership, services and effective partnerships.

    THE AGENCY

    The Alameda County Probation Department is an essential element of the County’s system of public protection and human services. The Department’s role is to reduce the impact of crime in the community by providing accurate, comprehensive and timely information and recommendations to the Courts, providing community-based sanctions and treatment for offenders, and working cooperatively with law enforcement agencies and community organizations with similar objectives. The Department provides a wide range of mandated and discretionary investigative, advisory, and supervisory services to adult and juvenile probationers pursuant to State law and the County Charter.

    THE POSITION

    Under general direction of the Chief Probation Officer, this position will play a role in overseeing initiatives that align with the department’s long-term strategic goals, while establishing and managing relationships with community programs partners and other external stakeholders; will assist in shaping and executing the strategic direction of the department; will hold the responsibility of building and establishing strategic partnerships related to initiatives, goals, and re-entry and realignment services, as well as collaboration to operationalize; key initiatives projects; performs other related duties as assigned.

    The Probation Deputy Director of Strategic Affairs classification is located in the Alameda County Probation Department (ACPD). The employee in this classification will be responsible for fostering collaborative efforts to promote operational practices, communication and branding to effectively implement prevention, intervention, and community transformation strategies to enhance public safety, realignment, strengthen communities, and improve outcomes for vulnerable populations.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


    Education :

    Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (180 quarter or 120 semester units), preferably in social services, education, community development, psychology, counseling, communications or criminal justice.

    AND

    Experience :

    The equivalent of five (5) years of full-time, professional-level experience in strategic planning, communication and leadership coordination, project management, and program development and administration, other related fields. Three (3) years of this experience must have included supervisory management responsibilities.

    Substitution :

    Possession of a master’s degree or above may be substituted for one (1) year of the non-supervisory experience.

    License :

    A valid California Motor Vehicle license is required.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

      • All applicants must meet all minimum standards for Peace Officer under Section 1031 of the Government Code, which includes:
      • Applicants are not required to be a US citizen but must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. (Per SB 960).
      • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
      • Graduated from high school, attained a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test or passed a California high school proficiency examination.
      • Fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.
      • Found free from any physical, emotional or mental condition, which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer, as determined by a licensed examining authority in accordance with the California Government Code.
      • Within the prescribed time limit after date of appointment, satisfactory completion of training for probation officers as specified by the California Board of Corrections, Peace Officer Standards and Training PC 832 and any other training required under law.
      • May be required to be armed within course and scope of duties.
      • Any felony conviction is disqualifying, except if granted a full and unconditional pardon from the felony conviction.
      • Willingness to perform work requiring irregular hours, holidays, and weekends.


    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

    Applicant must satisfactorily pass a thorough medical examination for Peace Officers and a psychological evaluation before job placement can take place.

    NOTE : The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

    EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

    THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
    A review of applicants' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process. A review of the supplemental questionnaire to determine best qualified. Those candidates considered the best qualified will move on to the next step in the examination process. An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises.
    CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION.

    Alameda County, California, was established in 1853. The County was created from the territory of two counties created in 1850: Contra Costa and Santa Clara. It was given the local name for the region, Alameda, which translated loosely as "a grove of poplars."
