San Bernardino County Museum is recruiting for a
Curator of Anthropology who is tasked with overseeing the department’s Anthropology Division including various collections and associated data, managing the preparation and preservation of artifacts, and developing educational programs, exhibits, and events in collaboration with the Education Division and the department’s curatorial team. The Curator of Anthropology will also oversee division volunteers, manage grant proposals, and direct activities related to research, publications, and record-keeping. A key responsibility of this position is overseeing the Museum’s compliance with NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA, including the management of claims, records, consultation systems, and processes related to repatriation.
The Curator of Anthropology will work in close partnership with local Tribal Nations and communities and collaborate directly with the Chief Deputy, who provides strategic oversight of repatriation initiatives and Indigenous collaboration across departments. The successful candidate will support the Museum’s commitments to ethical returns, shared stewardship, and long-term relationship-building with Indigenous partners.

Travel: Travel throughout the County is required, as incumbents will work at the various Museum sites throughout the County. Employees will be required to make provision for transportation. At the time of hire, a valid California driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing the transportation.
Availability: Incumbents will be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

Minimum Requirements EDUCATION: A Master's degree from an accredited college/university in Anthropology/Archaeology, Museum Studies or closely related field.

EXPERIENCE:
Option 1: One (1) year of anthropology curation experience, including collection management, interpretive programming, and supervision of professional, technical, or volunteer staff.
-OR-Option 2: Two (2) years of professional experience with anthropology as a researcher, archivist, collections manager, repatriation coordinator, or preparing exhibits and programs, including working with the public.
Desired QualificationsThe ideal candidate will have a Master's degree in Anthropology/Archaeology, along with five (5) years managing Anthropology collections and archives in a museum setting.
