    The San Bernardino County Department of Public Works is seeking a skilled and motivated Supervising Engineer to lead a team of professional engineers and technical staff.     Under direction, the Supervising Engineer oversees an engineering section within the Public Works Department, supervising staff and delivering complex projects related to flood control, highways, traffic, solid waste, fire hazard abatement, and other public works programs. This position ensures that engineering functions are carried out efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards.

    Opportunities Available in Multiple Divisions

    Transportation Design Division:
    Manages in-house and consultant design teams for capital improvement projects. Duties include consultant oversight, project delivery, construction support, reviewing external agency projects, and preparing bids, contracts, and Board items. Also responsible for maintaining design standards, quality control, and staff training.

    Permits Division:
    Oversees either the Transportation or Flood Control Permits section, supervising engineering and clerical staff. Responsibilities include processing encroachment and construction permits, addressing field issues, providing technical support, and coordinating with the public, County departments, and outside agencies.

    Contracts Division:
    Performs as resident engineer on construction projects, supervising inspectors and materials technicians. Handles plan and specification reviews, project advertisement, change orders, and coordination with contractors, design professionals, utilities, and regulatory agencies.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Pre-Employment Process: Incumbent must successfully complete a background check prior to appointment.

    Travel: Travel to various sites throughout the County is required; a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be provided at time of hire. Mileage reimbursement is available.

    Physical: This position includes the following demands: frequent sitting; occasional walking, standing, bending, and squatting; fine manipulation in both hands; continuously reach or work below the shoulder level; must frequently demonstrate near vision and occasionally demonstrate far vision; occasionally lift or carry ten (10) pounds or less; occasionally work near equipment and machinery on rough, uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces; occasionally exposed to dust, gas, toxic materials, noise, and extremes in temperature and/or humidity; occasionally use protective equipment or clothing.

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants must meet all components within one (1) of the following option requirements:

    Option 1: License: Must hold current status as a registered Professional Civil Engineer (PE) with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs. Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
    Experience: Three (3) years of professional experience working as a civil engineer or engineer in a closely related field.

    Option 2: License: Must hold current status as a registered Professional Civil Engineer (PE) with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs.

    Education: Forty-five semester (68 quarter) units in civil engineering or a closely related field. Candidates must provide a list of completed coursework.

    Experience: Four (4) years of professional experience working as a civil engineer or engineer in a closely related field.

    Note: Qualifying degrees or coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education Degree Equivalency Evaluation: Degrees or coursework completed outside the U.S. must be accompanied with an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service showing equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education.

They effectively manage teams and consultants, foster a collaborative work environment, and communicate clearly with both internal and external stakeholders.
