    Job Description:

    Temporary - Fleet Equipment Technician I - Apprentice

    Purpose:

    Under close supervisor, assists Equipment Technicians with tasks involving the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motorized equipment including trailers, maintained by Fleet Services.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    • Refuels and performs preventive maintenance on a variety of types of vehicles and other equipment.
    • Changes all type of tires and perform repairs to small tires.
    • Lubricates vehicles and changes oil and filters.
    • Initiates minor repairs and changes belts, hoses, windshield wipers, etc.
    • Records maintenance and service information and data on designated forms.
    • Transports vehicles of all types including heavy vehicles.


    Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised: None.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of vehicle mechanical work.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
    • Ability to use tools effectively in repair of equipment.
    • Ability to read and understand vehicle service manuals and lubrication charts.
    • Ability to follow proper safety practices and procedures necessary to operate various types of equipment.
    • Ability to interact with tact and courtesy and maintain a professional demeanor.
    • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent plus six (6) months of experience in a related field.
    • Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years
    • Completion of an accredited automotive, diesel or related certification program or an Associate’ degree from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for required experience up to a maximum of six (6) months.


    Licenses and Certifications Required:
    • Required a Class "C" Driver's License.
    • If required, must obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of employment with the City.


    Notes to Candidate:

    Pay Rate: $21.63

    Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years of age.

    Licenses and Certifications Required: None

    The Fleet Equipment Technician Apprentice is a temporary position that requires no experience. Successful candidates will be trained to perform preventive maintenance: oil changes, brake jobs, light duty vehicle repairs, minor vehicle and equipment repairs, etc.

    Preferred Experience: Candidates with basic automotive repair experience are preferred, though it's not required. Helpful skills include performing oil changes, mounting and repairing tires, testing and replacing batteries, inspecting and replacing brake components, and checking or topping off fluids like coolant and transmission fluid. Experience with replacing air filters, light bulbs, windshield wipers, and inspecting belts and hoses is also valuable. Additionally, familiarity with using diagnostic scanners (OBD-II), maintaining shop cleanliness, and working in field service environments can be beneficial.

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    1. Inspects and diagnoses damaged tires, identifies cause of tire failure, and determines if failure is due to recall or is covered under warranty.

    2. Repairs and/or disposes of used tires, as appropriate.

    3. Collects and transports new and used tires between various locations..

    4. Maintains used tire inventory records.

    5. Mounts and dismounts tires on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.

    6. Performs air pressure tire checks in field at various site locations.

    7. Performs daily housekeeping at shop and field sites.

    City Government
