Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of the Veterans Success Center, the incumbent is responsible for helping to coordinate and carry out programs along with fiscal operations, and general student services support within the Veterans Success Center (VSC).

In conjunction with the Director, the VSC Program Coordinator will perform a variety of complex and/or sensitive professional student service work related to student learning and development that align with the mission of Student Affairs. Assignments typically require the application of both knowledge and judgment in using the principles, techniques, standards, practices and professional skills characteristic of a particular student service program or activity. This generally requires planning, both interviewing and counseling techniques, and a high degree of judgment to recommend solutions to problems and changes in program procedures, and/or acting as a spokesperson within the area of expertise.

This role requires use of sound independent judgment while dealing with complex student service problems. It demands the utilization of advanced interpersonal skills with both individuals and groups, to be flexible and versatile, to use tact and sensitivity and to apply effective analytical skills in assisting with the preparation of documentation, mandatory reporting, and program assessment.

The incumbent is responsible for providing general advising and counseling for VSC students, overseeing program staff, coordinating program student support, offering on and off campus resources, and leadership development. In addition, the incumbent will engage in organizing events and maintaining working relationships with stakeholders. The incumbent also encourages inter- and intra-campus collaborations to deploy and collaborate on initiatives with local military-affiliated community organizations.

FLSA: Exempt (Not eligible for overtime.)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $ 5,540 per month, anticipated hire is at the minimum of the classification salary range

The Veterans Success Center (VSC) aids students in applying, accessing and certifying their VA Education benefits. The VSC also helps students access resources, ranging from leadership opportunities to peer-to-peer mentorship, which provide support in transitioning into a meaningful career.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:

The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at the lower levels in the Student Services Professional series are required for appointment into this classification. Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.

Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

Experience:

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Required Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Higher education student services experience related to the assigned program area (e.g., advising, admissions, residential life, student programming or development). Ability to work and collaborate with students, staff, and faculty from diverse racial, cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to supervise and coordinate the work of student assistants and volunteers. Ability to work independently and possess self-direction skills to be able to initiate plans, organize, prioritize, multi-task, and coordinate work in a fast-paced organization. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to provide direct programs and/or services to a diverse student population. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment. Ability to compile, prepare, write, and review reports. Proficiency using standard office software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite). Familiarity working with school-based record/data systems/software (Ex: PeopleSoft/Enrollment Manager/OnBase). Ability to understand, interpret and apply complex rules, regulations, and procedures. Ability to understand and analyze the nature of problems presented by constituents, present solutions, and project the consequences of alternative courses of action. Ability to carry out complex assignments without detailed instructions. Ability to travel as needed. Preferred Qualifications

At least two years of experience working with direct student services in a higher education setting. Knowledge of latest trends relating to transfer student veterans and dependents. Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students regarding, but not limited to marketing, event planning, record keeping, and facility use on behalf of the Veterans Success Centers. Knowledge of Veterans Success Center program functions and structure. Experience coordinating, developing, and instructing various workshops and programs related to veterans and military-connected families. Demonstrated experience working with local and state legislature in advocating for job placement for veterans, organizing events, preparing appropriate requests, and sponsoring legislation.
