    POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION

    City of Westminster Aquatics offer bi-weekly, and daily, group swim lessons at our recreation centers and aquatic facilities throughout the city. The Instructor II position is responsible for teaching participants of all ages in social and skill-based programming. This position serves as the lead instructor for swim lesson classes. Swim instructor staff have the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of program participants. This position is classified as safety-sensitive due to the nature of the work. Employees in this position may be subject to random drug testing and/or heightened supervision per personnel policies and rules.

    The availability of work hours for this position will be determined by one or all of these factors: season, program length, weather, and budget. The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate.

    GENERAL COMPETENCIES
    Job Specific - Every employee in this position must be able to:
    • Demonstrate knowledge of effective swimming instruction
    • Instruct swimming classes for students of various age groups and ability levels
    • Demonstrate treading water, diving, front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke and butterfly stroke in a proficient manner (minimum of 25 yards for all strokes other than butterfly which is 15 yards)
    • Demonstrate knowledge of American Red Cross Water Safety Program
    • Demonstrate knowledge of first aid procedures common in swimming pool operations
    • Act quickly and calmly in emergency situations by making proper judgment as to the correct course of action
    • Acquire and maintain nationally recognized First Aid and CPR certifications within six (6) months of hire
    • Acquire and maintain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification within six (6) months of hire
    • Work courteously with the public and support the City of Westminster guest service philosophy and SPIRIT values (Service, People, Integrity, Respect, Innovation, and Teamwork)
    • Maintains records of swimmer progress and completes digital report cards on completion of the session

    JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

    Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Tasks
    Provides quality swim lesson instruction to individuals of various age groups and ability levelsDemonstrate treading water, diving, front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke and butterfly stroke in a proficient manner (minimum of 25 yards for all strokes other than butterfly which is 15 yards)Provides a safe and educational experience for participantsMaintains ongoing records of activity levels and usage of swimming lessons, and completes evaluative report cards on completion of the sessionPlans and organizes lesson activities to develop fine/gross motor skills through games and coachingProvides a safe environment for participantsProvides fundamental aquatic-specific instruction when working in swim lesson programsKeeps lessons moving at an appropriate pace related to the age of the participantsSets up all equipment/supplies before lessons and cleans up after lessonsProvides good customer service to parents/guardians of the children in lessonsMonitors participants and enforces rules, regulations and safety precautions to prevent accidentsMaintains regular and punctual attendance Other Duties and Responsibilities
    Attends staff meetings and trainingsEnsures facility, materials and equipment are clean, well-maintained and safe at all timesResponds appropriately to emergencies Promotes City of Westminster Aquatics Programming in a positive aspect to participants, parents, guests, and the communityReviews instructional content, methods, and student evaluations to assess strengths and weaknesses, and to develop recommendations for course revision, development, or elimination Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

    Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses and Certifications
    Required :
    • Must be at least 15 years old
    • First Aid, CPR and AED certification within six (6) months of hire
    • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification within six (6) months of hire
    • Must demonstrate complete understanding of the progression of skills necessary to be successful as an instructor, through multiple sessions of teaching individual lessons and/or demonstration or lesson audit upon competition of WSI certification
    Preferred :
    • Teaching experience working with children or work in a swim instruction program or aquatic setting
    Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.
    Physical Requirements
    Work performed is physical in nature and involves sufficient physical strength and stamina for:
    • Constant submersion in the water while lessons are being taught and occasional sitting, standing, and walking throughout pool area to observe patrons during swimming classes
    • Constant near and far acuity to observe pools for possible troubled swimmers and safety hazards; constant hearing to be aware of troubled individuals that may be out of line of sight
    • Occasional lifting of ten (10) pounds from floor to overhead to move equipment and supplies; occasional lifting of up to 75 pounds from floor to chest to assist in moving furniture, equipment, and patrons on backboards
    • Occasionally push and/or pull 75 pounds to remove individuals from pool area in an emergency situation, and set up bleachers for events and lane ropes for lap swim

    WORKING CONDITIONS
    Frequent exposure to pool water. Occasional lifting up to 75 pounds and the possible lifting of an injured individual. Frequent exposure to noise levels that may cause distractions. High public contact position requiring adequate spoken interaction with the public and pool guests. Ability to work in a high humidity and environments of various temperature for long periods. The position requires a great deal of communication with City employees, the public, and outside agencies.
    Required Materials and Equipment
    Personal floatation devices, kick boards, pull buoys, and other assorted pool toys and learning devices kept at City recreation facilities.

    Benefit Package

    The City of Westminster does not participate in the Social Security system. In lieu of Social Security contributions, the city contributes to a 401(a) defined contribution plan on your behalf.

    401(a) Contribution Rates:
    Employee Mandatory Contribution: 11.5% of your base pay. Contributions are pre-tax and fully vested.
    Employer Contribution: 12% of your base pay.

    Employer Contribution Vesting Schedule
    • Less than 3 years - 0%
    • 3 to 4 years - 60%
    • 4 to 5 years - 80%
    • Over 5 years - 100%
    • For employees age 55 and older, the employer contributions are 100% vested
