    Library Department Summary

    Monterey County Free Libraries seeks candidates with a strong desire for meaningful public service and the ability to work with a wide variety of needs in an ever-changing environment. Openings include branch support, outreach, literacy, and other independent positions, along with positions in branch libraries across the County.     Position Summary
    The Library Assistant II will have working knowledge of public libraries' general purposes, routines, services, books, literature, media. The incumbent will operate a personal computer with standard software, be able to learn specialized library software systems and be knowledgeable in basic reference resources and services. The Library Assistant II will have working knowledge of general office procedures, record keeping, some knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations, understand how to deliver quality customer service to library patrons, be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

    Current vacancies include positions in King City, San Lucas, and Seaside/Big Sur. Applicants interested in driving and providing services through library bookmobiles are encouraged to apply. Additional positions in other locations may open.

    This classification is part of a flexible series. Incumbents appointed at the lower level of the career series may be promoted up to the higher level of the career series subject to their meeting the employment standards for the higher class and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority.

    The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used County-wide to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis.

    Examples of Duties

    • Charges and discharges library materials; performs other circulation duties as required
    • Assists and advises patrons in the location and selection of books and other library materials
    • Sorts and shelves books and maintains proper shelf order, assists in weeding collection
    • Answers patrons' reference questions, referring more difficult questions to a Librarian
    • Explains library policies and services to the public
    • Performs other duties as required

    THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
    Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
    Working Knowledge of:
    • Public libraries including general purposes, routines, procedures and services
    Some Knowledge of:
    • Library technology and computer applications in libraries
    • Principles and practices of public relations and customer service
    Skill and Ability to:
    • Understand and follow written and oral instructions
    • Operate a personal computer with standard software, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and to learn specialized library software systems such as KOHA
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public, and deliver quality customer service to library patrons
    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
    Desirable Qualification:
    • Bilingual English/Spanish and bicultural experience and skills are highly desirable

    Experience

    OPTION I

    Approximately 2 years of experience performing duties equivalent to those of a Library Assistant I for the Monterey County Library:

    OR

    OPTION II

    Approximately three years performing sub-professional duties equivalent to a Library Assistant I in another library setting.

    Education

    Completion of courses required for an Associate of Arts degree with emphasis in library science, liberal arts, or a closely related field at a college or university.

    C ONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    The required conditions of employment include, bu t are not limited to the following:

    • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license or the ability to provide suitable transportation that is approved by the appointing authority.
    • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency. Attend meetings outside of scheduled work hours.
    • As a condition of employment, prospective employees may be required to submit to a background review which may include a review of information concerning present and/or prior employment, driving record, and record of any criminal convictions.
