    Summary

    Minimum starting salary: $75,000.00 Annually, depending on qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Required:
    • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
    • 5 years of work experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment, preferably in the public sector.
    • Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License
    • HAZMAT Certification Hazmat Endorsement
    • State of Texas vehicle inspector license, if driving heavy equipment as job requirement a CDL will be required and additional technical training and certifications may be required for some incumbents.
    • Technical certifications from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) are preferred and may be required.
    Preferred:
    • Associate's degree in Automotive Repair, Business or Public Administration, or related field
    • S upervisory experience


    Position Description
    Under basic supervision, supervises staff of Equipment Mechanics in the Fleet Services (FS) work group; supervises the maintenance and repair of City vehicles and equipment, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; plans, schedules, prioritizes and reviews the work of Mechanics.
    Position Responsibilities
    • Supervises the maintenance and repair of City vehicles, equipment and related assets; reviews status of vehicles and equipment and recommends replacement and major repair options; assures the quality of the services and work products.
    • Prioritizes assignments and work orders and reviews the work of Mechanics for work quality and timely completion of assigned duties and responsibilities
    • Allocates resources, equipment and tools; assures that quality and safety standards are met, and appropriate services are provided.
    • Oversees operations of the Fleet Maintenance facilities; maintains work orders, records and logs of services performed and general vehicle information; reports any operational problems to supervisor in a timely manner and completes other reports as required.
    • Orders parts as needed; coordinates with parts and services vendors and other supply sources; maintains records of parts requisitions and stock inventory.
    • Performs work of Mechanic as needed; assures that staff adheres to policies and procedures; conducts safety meetings and assures compliance with safety and service standards.
    • Oversees maintenance of the shop facility; assures that safety rules and regulations are adhered to and that the work zone and all equipment are in safe operating condition; assures that lubricants and chemicals are disposed of in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
    • Supervises staff, develops priorities and assigns tasks and projects; evaluates performance and resolves workload and technical issues; develops staff skills and training plans; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve priorities, workload, resource allocation, equipment and technical issues.
    • Assists with budget preparation and administration; monitors and controls expenditures; collects operational and technical information and compiles data for reports.
    • Monitors FS activities, evaluates information, identifies trends and recommends solutions; assures FS activities and procedures are in compliance with all laws, policies, regulations and standards.
    • May be required to respond afterhours, including holidays and weekends, in the event of a departmental or City-wide emergency.

    Governance and Organization

    Waco is a home rule city with a council-manager form of government. The City Council is comprised of a Mayor, elected at-large, and five City Council members representing single-member districts, all serving two-year terms. The City Council sets the tax rate, approves the budget, appoints members to City boards and commissions, enacts City ordinances, and appoints the City Manager, City Attorney, City Secretary, and the Municipal Court Judge.

    The City has a strong Financial Management Policy that guides the operation and delivery of quality City services, contributes to excellent AA+ and Aa1 bond ratings, and maintains an unassigned fund balance reserve in the General Fund equal to 28% of current year budgeted expenditures. The City of Waco has more than 1,600 employees and a total operating budget of over $400 million.
