Ideal Candidate

The Facilities Maintenance Worker under close supervision, performs skilled work in several trades in the maintenance and repair of City-owned buildings in a team setting or alone.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (Responsibilities including but not limited to)

• Plumbing (repair/replace mixing valves and stems, plunge toilets and use power augers)
• Carpentry (constructing shelves, hanging a door)
• Electrical (replacing a switch and/or receptacle, changing out a ballast, replacing light bulbs)
• Painting (replacing a section of drywall, patching a hole, taping, priming, finish work)
• Skilled work in HVAC (changing filters, changing belts, temperature readings, troubleshooting controls and components)

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Building trade methods, materials and equipment; safe work practices and estimate job material, duration and cost.

Ability to: Work efficiently with others, log/record work completed, climb ladders, Use the required tools and equipment skillfully and safely; and work independently.

Skills: Operate a variety of power tools such as saws, sanders and pressure washers, mixers, drills and grinders.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Requires training equivalent to the completion of 12th grade, supplemented by technical trade school or apprenticeship training in one of the recognized trades and three years experience in facility maintenance.

License/Certificate: Possession of a Class C driver’s license issued by DMV.

Highly Desirable: Knowledge of troubleshooting electrical controls.

SELECTION PROCESS

All applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job-related qualifications. The department will invite the most qualified candidates to a written skills test and/or oral panel interview examination. Candidates must receive a score of 70% or higher on the oral panel interview examination to be placed on the eligibility list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner. A limited number of candidates from the eligibility list will be invited to a Department Interview. Depending upon the number of candidates, this process may be altered. The Public Works Director will make the final recommendation for appointment.

Note: Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee that a candidate will be invited to participate in the selection process. The City of Burlingame reserves the right, at its discretion, to limit the number of qualified candidates invited to the selection process.

PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT

Prior to appointment, candidates will be required to provide their DMV driving record. Candidates must have an acceptable driving record defined as follows:

In the last FIVE years:

• No more than 3 moving violations
• No outstanding warrants for failure to appear

In the last SEVEN years:

• No convictions for reckless driving
• No convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Applicants with six or more points over the previous three years on his/her driving record will be considered to have an unacceptable driving record and will be disqualified from this recruitment process.

Prior to appointment, candidates will be required to:

• pass a fingerprint check submitted to the Department of Justice
• pass a background investigation, drug screen and physical examination
• comply with The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 and provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States at date of hire

This position has a 12-month probationary period from the date of hire. Whereby, the selected candidate must receive a rating of no less than 'satisfactory' at the end of the probationary period to continue forward with employment. During the 12-month probationary period, the selected candidate can be terminated with, or without cause.
