    OVERVIEW

    Kitsap County is seeking an experienced security officer to fill this critical role that serves as a Court Security Officer to the Kitsap County Courthouse and Juvenile Detention Facility . This position offers schedule flexibility while providing purpose and service to the community of Kitsap County. This role is the perfect blend of customer service and law enforcement for someone looking to support the courthouse on an as-needed basis.

    As a Court Security Officer for the Sheriff’s Office, you will:
    • Ensure the safety and security of the Kitsap County Courthouse and Juvenile Detention Facility, maintaining secure operations across high-traffic public environments.
    • Lead front-line access control operations by greeting visitors, verifying authorization, and directing all entrants through required security screening procedures to protect staff, judiciary, and the public.
    • Oversee daily patrol operations throughout assigned facilities, proactively identifying and addressing fire hazards, vandalism, suspicious behavior, loitering, and criminal activity.
    • Monitor surveillance and security systems, responding decisively to unusual or emergent situations to prevent escalation and ensure continuity of court operations.
    • Document and manage security intelligence by entering detailed observations into security logs, including suspicious activity, visitor incidents, and inspection findings to support investigations and accountability.
    • Enforce courthouse rules and regulations by warning violators, confiscating or temporarily securing prohibited or legal weapons, and expelling individuals engaged in disruptive or criminal behavior.
    • Exercise independent judgment within established Sheriff’s Office and County policies, selecting appropriate courses of action in dynamic security situations.
    • Collaborate with Sheriff’s supervisory staff, law enforcement partners, court personnel, and the public to maintain a professional, impartial, and secure environment.


    What You Bring:
    Professional Credentials / Licensing:
    • Sheriff’s Office Limited Commission (required to obtain and maintain): Ensures legal authority to perform sworn security duties within court facilities.
    • Valid Washington State Driver’s License: Required for employment eligibility and mobility between assigned locations.

    Professional Experience:
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience in investigative work, law enforcement, criminology, or a closely related field: Demonstrates applied knowledge necessary to assess risk, enforce laws, and conduct interviews.
    • Operational decision-making experience in a security or law enforcement setting: Required to independently assess situations and act appropriately without constant supervision.

    Technical / Industry Background:
    • Experience monitoring surveillance systems, conducting patrols, and responding to irregular or emergency incidents: Critical for maintaining situational awareness and rapid response capability.
    • Proficiency with department-specific computer systems, including databases, word processing, document imaging, spreadsheets, and web-based applications.

    Specialized Expertise:
    • Knowledge of court operations, legal terminology, legal documents, and search-and-seizure laws: Ensures lawful and effective security enforcement in judicial environments.
    • Training in investigative techniques, suspect interviewing, and defensive tactics.
    • Demonstrated ability to safely handle firearms and other security equipment in high-responsibility public settings.

    Communication / Interpersonal Skills:
    • Strong oral and written communication skills to clearly document incidents, provide instructions, and interact professionally with judges, staff, detainees, and the public.
    • Proven ability to build cooperative working relationships using tact, patience, and courtesy with individuals from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.

    Pre-Employment Requirements:
    • Submit official transcripts from an accredited college or university or business school, if education is being used to meet the minimum qualifications.
    • Pass all job-related examinations/tests necessary to demonstrate required knowledge, skills and abilities, in a multi-phase testing process as determined by the hiring authority at time of job posting. These tests may include, but are not limited to, oral interviews, medical examination, truth verification test, psychological evaluation and weapons qualification with passing scores set by Kitsap County Sheriff's Office.
    • Pass a comprehensive background investigation/criminal background check through law enforcement agencies.


    At time of appointment, the successful candidate must:
    • Be able to obtain and maintain a valid and current Sheriff's Office limited commission as provided by the current Sheriff.

    Within six months of appointment, the successful candidate must:
    • Possess CPR, First Aid and AED certification.

    • Who May Apply: This position is open to the general public. Applications will be screened for qualifications and completion of all the required materials and forms.     • This position is classified as eligible for overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
    • 'At will' and covered under the Appendix C (as amended) to Kitsap County Personnel Manual .

    • Employees must wear the office issued uniform for Court Security Officers.


    RECRUITMENT PROCESS:
    This position is being posted to create an on-call roster to fill staffing needs due to Court Security absences in the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office. In order to qualify for a position on the hiring register, you are required to successfully pass the following requirements: Review of qualifications and oral board interviews. An applicant must successfully pass each examination requirement before being able to proceed to the next process.
    • APPLICATION REVIEW: Civil Service representatives will review applications to ensure candidates meet the minimum qualifications. Applications will then be reviewed for the preferred education, experience, and certifications to rank order the top candidates to move to the interview phase.
    • ORAL BOARD INTERVIEWS : The oral board interview score reflect 100% of the applicants overall score for register placement. Oral board interviews are tentatively scheduled to occur in late January 2026.
    • HIRING REGISTER : When an applicant on the hiring register is offered permanent employment it is contingent upon the applicant successfully passing a truth verification test, psychological and a complete reference and background investigation, executive board interview and any other process deemed necessary (which may include medical and drug testing) by the Sheriff's Office. Any conviction record may be disqualifying. The term of the hiring register shall normally be for six (6) months and in no event longer than two (2) years.
