Responsibilities
The Animal Service Division is recruiting positions to staff in Neighborhood Services Department The Animal Services Officer is an entry level position responsible for enforcing the City of Kansas City Code of Ordinances to ensure as well as engaging with the public to assist and educate them on issues related to the care of animals and public safety to ensure the safety and welfare of animals, residents and others within the City of Kansas City Missouri.
- Responds to complaints of unleashed, unlicensed, vicious, diseased, injured, neglected, abused or stray dogs and other animals
- Investigates reported issues and takes appropriate action to resolve issues found
- Documents investigative findings in detail and processes cases.
- Picks up and impounds animals running at large, which are ill, injured, reported to be rapid, or have bitten persons
- Educates animal owners in the field on requirements of the City of Kansas City code of ordinances and responsible pet ownership
- Issues citations and/or warrants for owners violating animal control ordinances when necessary; appears in court as city prosecution witness
- Works with the City of Kansas City Prosecutor to develop cases for prosecution
- Utilizes and maintains assigned animal control equipment and vehicles
- Assists Law enforcement and emergency services as necessary
- Performs other duties as assigned
- The Animal Services Officer position shifts will vary to ensure staffing seven days a week and 24 hours per day. There will be mandatory overtime and on call shifts to ensure Animal Services staff are available to respond to priority calls and Emergency Services, including Kansas City Police Department and Kansas City Fire Department requests.
Qualifications
Requires High school graduation or equivalency. Must possess a valid State -issued driver's license in accordance with the City of KCMO. Must possess or be eligible to obtain the required Security Type B License from the Kansas City Police Department. Must obtain certification as an Animal Control Officer one through MACA, NACA or an equivalent approved by the Animal Services Division Manager within the first 6 months of appointment. Must pass a physical examination as prescribed by the City. Will be required to pass a preemployment drug screen. Must pass a background check as proscribed by the City. Must be able to lift 50 pounds to chest height or 100 pounds with assistance, work in hazardous and extreme weather conditions, and handle animals with unknown or aggressive temperaments.

For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained. If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
